Sanwo-Olu Calls for Global Collaboration to Strengthen Air Power

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has highlighted the need for international collaboration in building formidable air power capable of deterring threats and ensuring the safety of citizens.

He made this call during the Fourth African Air Forces Forum held on Thursday in Victoria Island, Lagos. The governor was represented at the event by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat.

The forum had the theme: “Strengthening Collaborations in Advanced Aerospace Technologies for Enhanced National and Regional Security”.

The governor said the theme of the forum resonated with security challenges faced in Africa.

He noted that no single country could tackle security challenges alone.

He, therefore, urged the air forces to work together to create a safer, more secure, and prosperous Africa and world for future generations.

“They are not just tasked with their own missions but also with supporting other branches of the military and helping the civilian population to enhance overall security.”

According to him, it is essential for nations to collaborate, share resources, expertise, and intelligence to create a strong air power that can deter threats and safeguard the people.

“The issues we confront as a region are complex, ranging from terrorism and transnational crime to safeguarding our extensive airspace.

“These challenges call for innovative solutions, collaborative strategies, and a unified approach,” he said.

The governor noted the importance of leveraging technology to reduce collateral damage during air missions, particularly when terrorists used innocent civilians as human shields.

“We must adapt to the changing nature of warfare, embrace technological advancements, and invest in the training and development of our air forces.

“During this Forum, I really hope we can dive into discussions about how we can effectively use technology to reduce, if not, completely eliminate collateral damage during air missions,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu commended the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, for hosting the forum and for his vision and commitment to organising the event as the Chairman of the Association of African Air Forces.

He also expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his support of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, especially the Nigerian air force.

The governor said the forum represented a united front committed to ensuring peace and security in Africa.

“This forum is not just a meeting of military leaders; it is a chance to forge lasting partnerships and nurture a spirit of cooperation.

“It is an opportunity to strengthen the ties of friendship and solidarity that connect us as experts in regional and global security.

“Let us join forces to create a safer, more secure, and prosperous Africa and world for future generations,” Sanwo-Olu said.
