In the early hours of Sunday, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State was removed from the premises of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Benin by Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Frank Mba.
Obaseki arrived at the INEC office shortly after 2 a.m. and remained until the police escorted him out.
The incident occurred after protesters, led by Dennis Idahosa, the running mate of All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Monday Okpebholo, demanded that the governor vacate the premises at around 3:30 a.m.
As Obaseki was being led away, mobile policemen deployed to the site urged him to leave.
Before Obaseki’s removal, APC National Secretary, Surajudeen Basiru, spoke to the press, stating that the governor had no legitimate reason to be at the INEC office, as he was not a candidate.
Basiru labeled Obaseki’s presence as an abuse of office.
