Nigeria Secures Fifth Consecutive Women’s AfroBasket Title

In a thrilling final at the 2025 Women’s AfroBasket in Abidjan, Nigeria triumphed over a determined Mali, becoming the first team to claim the championship five times in a row.

Nigeria maintained their remarkable 29-0 winning streak, unbroken since the third-place match in the 2015 tournament in Yaoundé, Cameroon.

Despite a sluggish start, as seen in many of their earlier games, Nigeria, led by coach Rena Wakama, rallied in the second quarter to head into halftime level at 41–41 against a fierce Malian side.

With the score tied,  Wakama’s ladies came out in the third quarter with renewed focus and energy taking a 61-56 lead in the quarter, capitalising on Mali’s turnovers.

In spite of Mali’s valiant effort in the final quarter to mount a comeback, Nigeria maintained their composure and held on to their lead.

Nigeria displayed relentless confidence, matching every Malian score with one of their own, ultimately clinching a 78-64 victory as the final buzzer rang.

This triumph solidifies Nigeria as the only nation to secure five consecutive Women’s AfroBasket championships, unmatched by any other team.

According to NAN, South Sudan, in their tournament debut, edged out Senegal 66-65 in the third-place match to claim the bronze medal.
