Osun Assembly Passes Consumer Protection Bill

Osun Assembly Passes Consumer Protection Bill

The Osun State House of Assembly has passed a new legislation aimed at strengthening consumer rights and supporting fair business practices across the state.

The bill, known as the Consumer Protection Agency Bill, 2024, received legislative approval during Monday’s plenary session following the presentation of a report by an ad hoc committee.

Speaker Adewale Egbedun commended the committee’s work, noting that its recommendations played a key role in fine-tuning the bill to effectively address the needs of both consumers and business owners in Osun.

He added that the bill’s passage positions Osun to empower consumers, promote fair trade, and establish proper dispute resolution mechanisms.

Egbedun also noted that the bill would now be sent to Governor Ademola Adeleke for assent.

Earlier, the bill’s sponsor, Majority Leader Babajide Adewunmi, said it seeks to promote and defend consumer rights in the state.

He explained that the bill proposes the creation of the Osun State Consumer Protection Agency to safeguard consumer interests.

Adewunmi said the agency would also encourage fair business practices throughout the state.
