Belgian Lawmaker Claims Iranian Plot to Abduct Her

Darya Safai, a Belgian parliamentarian and advocate for women’s rights, revealed that security officials warned her of a potential scheme by Iranian authorities to abduct her.
“The Belgian police and security services contacted me regarding an alarming situation concerning my safety,” Iranian-born Safai wrote on social media platform X.
“They had received worrying information indicating that the Islamic regime in Iran wants to kidnap me and take me to Tehran.
“They plan to do this via Turkey. I have therefore been strongly advised not to travel to Turkey,” Safai, who represents the Flemish nationalist party N-VA in parliament, added.
Safai sees a link between her advocacy for classifying the elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation in the European Union (EU) and the kidnapping plans.
A resolution she introduced on this matter was recently adopted in the Belgian parliament, she wrote.
Safai said she was imprisoned in Iran before fleeing to Belgium.
“I know very well what monsters you are, and I know that you torture, rape, and murder,” she wrote on X, addressing Iranian authorities.
“And even though I fear for my life, I will never stop fighting for freedom,” she wrote.
Numerous EU sanctions are already in place against Iran due to serious human rights violations.
The Iranian government is accused of brutal violence against peaceful demonstrators, arbitrary arrests, and torture of government critics.
The IRGC has, however, not yet been classified as a terrorist organisation.
